- Jon Stinchcomb

PORT CLINTON – The city of Port Clinton’s specialized beach wheelchair and Ada-accessible ramp got put to good use recently, allowing two visitors to enjoy the scenic Lake Erie shoreline together at Waterworks Park.

Two sisters from Findlay became the first to utilize the chair at Port Clinton’s city beach last week, according to city officials.

The chair, described as an all-terrain wheelchair, features four large inflated tires, which are designed to be easier to push and traverse any kind of terrain seamlessly, including sand, gravel, grass or concrete.

The beach wheelchair has been made available to the City of Port Clinton through a grant from The Ability

Center of Greater Toledo, an organization that advocates, educates, partners and provides services supporting people with disabilities so they can thrive in area communities.

According to the organization, helping two sisters spend a summer day together at the shoreline in Port Clinton is “what it’s all about.”

The chair is available from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday at no charge to both residents or visitors. The chair can be utilized on both ends of Port Clinton’s city beach, which are at Lakeview Park and Waterworks Park, respectively.

To reserve the chair or for more information about it, call Port Clinton’s public safety and service department at 419734-5522, ext. 239. jstinchcom@gannett.com 419-680-4897
