Whetzel, Robert

1940 - 2021

-

Robert Taylor “Bob”

Whetzel, of Upper Arlington,

Ohio, passed away painlessly and peacefully surrounded by his wife and three children on September

1, 2021. Bob was born on July 11, 1940, in Champaign,

Illinois, where he was raised by his parents

Tom and Odile Whetzel. He graduated from Champaign

High School in 1958 where he was on the state championship swim team and played on the golf team.

He earned his Bachelor of

Arts at Depauw University in 1962 where he was a member of the Beta Theta

Pi Fraternity. At Depauw, he met the love of his life and best friend, Sherri (Brown).

They married in 1962 and then he went on to receive his MBA from Indiana

University in 1964. Bob started his long banking career in New York City on

Wall Street and upon the birth of his first child he and Sherri wanted to get back to the Midwest to be close to family where he was fortunate enough to be offered a position at City

National Bank in Columbus,

Ohio. He stayed with them through their evolution from Bank One to Chase.

He continued his banking career until the age of 67 and has counseled and managed many people in their banking careers who loved working with him. Bob was a founding member of the Upper

Arlington Rotary Club where he served as President in 1992, received the Paul

Harris Fellow Award and the Rotary Service Above

Self Award. Bob also served on the First Community

Church Governing Board,

First Community Village

Board of Directors, and

Marburn Academy Board.

In recent years he loved doing Meals on Wheels.

Since the age of 12, Bob played and loved the game of golf. As much as the game itself, Bob loved the camaraderie around it.

His membership at Scioto

Country Club gave him some of his best friends in life and provided years of memories for his family as well. When he had to give up the game for health reasons, he remained a staple at the club and thoroughly enjoyed his friends there.

Bob’s passion for life was immeasurable and his love for family and friends was known by all who knew him.

He knew no strangers and befriended all walks of life.

He enjoyed many vacations with family and friends. One of his favorite traditions was his family Sunday night cookouts by his pool which were a tradition for over 20 years with his pride and joys, his grandkids, who all learned to swim and go off a diving board at his pool. Bob will be remembered for his smile, big hugs, love of people and laughter. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends and all who knew him. He was an amazing husband, father, papa, son, brother and friend. Bob is survived by his loving wife,
