LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Open enrollment isn’t the answer

-

Open enrollment looks good on paper, but in action it would not work.

You would have inner-city schools with little or no enrollment, as long as the method of funding does not change. Let’s put all the money in one pot, divide by enrolled students, that number equals the distribution per school.

OK, the folks in New Albany are not going to go for this, but look at the benefits — no matter where you live, the scales of education would be equal.

Welfare seems well-funded

Once again we read where Social Security and Medicare are facing financial crisis, why don’t we ever hear about the welfare system running out of money? We paid money into Social Security and Medicare and expect a return on our money, but no one paid into welfare!

Texas doesn’t put safety first

Texas has just passed two new problematic laws that negatively affect everyone in the state, especially, but not only, women. The first is the unprecedented new anti-abortion law. It not only forbids any abortion after the first six weeks, with no exceptions for rape or incest, but allows anyone to sue someone who aids in an abortion, including just giving a car ride to a women’s clinic. That means that everyone else has more power over a woman’s body than she does herself.

The second new Texas law allows anyone to carry a weapon, with no requirement for a permit, a background check or even any training in usage or gun safety. That puts people in possible danger from anyone they pass on the street. It also will likely increase danger in domestic violence cases, again especially, but not only, for women. It also puts children in risk if there is a gun in the house with no safety measures in place.

Texas is just not a safe place to be. Anita Bucknam, Worthington
