Robert D. Sommers, 98, of London, died Wednesday, September 22, 2021, in his residence. Born October 2, 1922, in Bournevill­e, Ohio, he was a son of Nelson D. and Laura (Hill) Sommers. A well-known lifelong farmer, Bob was active in many organizati­ons including being a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, where he ushered for many years, Chandler Lodge #138 F&AM, OES #386 where he was a past Worthy Patron 13 times, IOOF #70, London, Guernsey Breeders Associatio­n, member and past President of London Rotary Club where he won man of the year and the Joe Yoder farmer of the year. He was a member of most of these organizati­ons for over 65 years. In 1999, he was inducted in the Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame. Bob also won the Ohio State Fair Premier Guernsey Breeder for 15 consecutiv­e years, while also serving as the assistant Cattle Superinten­dent for 26 consecutiv­e years. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Robert D. and Denise Sommers of Middletown; daughter, Jane Brock of South Solon; five grandchild­ren, Susan Green of Illinois, Bridget (Jon) Mcmillen of Lewis Center, Brian (Savannah) Brock of South Solon, Lorraine (Adrian) Terry of London and Rob (Chelsea) Sommers of Georgia; two step grandchild­ren, Jessica Kalmus of Middletown and Lauren Caudill of Gratis; 12 great grandchild­ren; sister, Martha (Ralph) Turly of Orient; nieces and nephews; and caregiver, Michelle Budd of London. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elizabeth, son-in-law Stephen Brock, sisters Bea Winfough and Florence Cryder and brother Clarence Sommers. Funeral services will be held at 1PM Saturday, September 25, 2021, in the First United Methodist Church of London with Pastor Dave Leckrone officiatin­g. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, London. Friends may call at the church from 10AM until time of services Saturday.
