City Schools to enhance security at sports events
Columbus City Schools is putting new security measures in place for all middle and high school athletic events, including limiting attendance, through the end of December.
All district athletic events will be limited to only family members of participating students and enrolled students from participating schools through, according to the district's website.
The new security measures are effective immediately and are being implemented as a precautionary measure to concerns over increased threats, the superintendent said.
Numerous social media posts suggested violence at many Columbus City Schools sites this week, Superintendent Talisa Dixon said in a message to families Friday.
“Parents, students, and staff who saw the messages voiced their concerns,” Dixon said in the message. “Each instance was taken seriously and investigated, alongside Columbus Police in most cases. Fortunately, nothing credible was substantiated.”
Under the new policies, all fans will be subject to screening by district safety and security employees, including the use of handheld metal detector wands, the district said.
Bags and purses will not be allowed and wallets and wristlets can be no bigger than 5 inches by 8 inches. Weapons, alcohol and tobacco products are also not allowed on district property.
And fans will not be able to re-enter an event if they leave, unless they buy a new ticket.
“In the event of rising safety concerns, limited spectator tickets may continue to ensure the safety of students, families, and guests attending all CCS athletic events,” says a statement on the district's website.
