Joseph Cunningham, at home, surrounded by his loving family, succumbed to his battle with fibrosarco­ma on December 24, 2021 at the age of 77. He was born on February 10, 1944 in Gettysburg Pennsylvan­ia to Joseph and Neal (Fuller) Cunningham who both preceded him in death as well as his brother William. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 55 years, Leslie (Anderson); children, Andrew (Melissa) and their daughter, Tatum of Redondo Beach, California; Timothy and his daughter, Aiko of Redondo Beach, California; Kathryn and her children, Kai and Paxton of Worthingto­n. Joe graduated with a BA degree from the University of Delaware in 1966 and received a degree in Medicine from the University of Maryland. Following residency training in Internal Medicine and chief residency in Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals, he served in the US Army as Captain and Battalion Surgeon. He then completed Pulmonary fellowship training at the University of California, San Francisco. Joe spent 50 years of practice in pulmonary and sleep medicine in Columbus, Ohio and Mount Carmel hospitals before retirement. He served in various capacities including chair person department of Medicine and chair peer review, director of pulmonary function Mount Carmel East. Joe enjoyed teaching medical students from the Ohio State school of Medicine. He was a recipient of the Preceptor Award and Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Besides his pursuit of Medicine he enjoyed photograph­y,

fly fishing and sailing. He

will miss our best friends, Marie and Mario Marrocco, Martha Cahall and Debbie Andrix who helped us through this illness. He also has been appreciati­ve of the kind and knowledgea­ble care that he received from Drs. David Liebner, Karl Haglund, Safar Khan and the Medical staff of the James Cancer Hospital. The family extends special thanks to the wonderful care given to Joe by the Hospice team at Mount Carmel. A celebratio­n of life for Joe will be held at a later date.
