Mannings to headline Memorial pro-am

- Jacob Myers

Former NFL quarterbacks who have collectively won seven Super Bowls will be playing in Wednesday's Proam at Muirfield Village Golf Club before the Memorial Tournament.

Former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, his brother and former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young will play with the Mannings' younger brother Cooper and 11-time Pro Bowler selection and former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald in the Golden Bear Pro-am.

In 2021, Peyton and Eli Manning and Fitzgerald headlined the celebrities, along with Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry, Indycar Series driver Graham Rahal and former Cincinnati Bengals player and Pro Football Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz.

Fitzpatrick entering Memorial playing his best

Matt Fitzpatrick has been tantalizingly close to his first career PGA Tour victory this season.

With back-to-back top-five finishes and just three shots off the lead entering the final day at the PGA Championship two weeks ago at Southern Hills, Fitzpatrick has every reason to be as confident as any other player in the field at the Memorial Tournament.

"It's been a good season so far, and like I say, last sort of two tournaments I've played, I've played well," Fitzpatrick said. "This week is a little bit different for me. The one time that I played well it was at a different time of year, and the golf course was very, very different, firm and fast."

Fitzpatrick has made 103 appearances at PGA Tour events, including five as an amateur. In 2022, he has already notched six top-10 finishes in only 10 events, topping the past two seasons when he had five top-10 finishes.

After finishing tied for second at the Wells Fargo Championship in Maryland in early May, Fitzpatrick made the final pairing on Sunday at the PGA Championship, entering the day at 6-under. He shot 3-over, 73, and finished tied for fifth, missing the playoff with Will Zalatoris and Justin Thomas by two shots.

This week's tournament is Fitzpatrick's fourth time playing at Muirfield Village. He played both the Workday Charity Open and Memorial Tournament here in 2020, posting the best round of the entire field — 4-under, 68 — on Sunday at the Memorial to finish third. Last year, he missed the cut. Memorial bag policy

Thinking of bringing a backpack or a camera bag to the Memorial Tournament? Don't.

Per the PGA Tour guidelines, patrons attending the tournament this week are permitted to bring in only non-transparent purses or bags that have a height, width and length no greater than 6 inches each.

Clear, transparent bags can be 12 inches tall and 12 inches long, but must still be no greater than 6 inches in width. Clear backpacks are not permitted.

Patrons are permitted to bring a 1-gallon plastic freezer bag to store anything they might need, however the bag must be clear and not tinted. Diaper bags and other medically necessary bags are permitted but will be inspected.

If you plan on bringing a folding chair to sit at your favorite hole, be sure to take it out of the bag before bringing it onto the grounds of course. Otherwise you will be asked to take it back to your car or throw it out. jmyers@dispatch.com @_jcmyers
