Palmer, Sue

1950 - 2022

Sue Ellen Hertenstein Palmer departed this life at 72 years young after a long illness. She was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio on March 21, 1950 at Mary Rutan Hospital, the second daughter of Colonel C.H. Hertenstein and his wife, Vivian Mary Maude Schrader Hertenstein. Sue enjoyed a small town up bringing and was raised on a farm with cows, sheep and among several horses stories were most shared of her horse Gypsy. Sue was very involved in extracurricular activities in school, including National Honor Society and graduated Bellefontaine High School with the class of 1968.

Sue briefly attended Ohio University before moving on to become a bank teller in Columbus, Ohio. She married John Howard Palmer on March 29th, 1980 in a ceremony at First United Methodist Church in her hometown of Bellefontaine, Ohio with a reception at her parents’ home. Sue and John settled into married life in a little house on Larcomb Avenue in Columbus

and in 1982 had their first

child, a daughter, Mary Ann Palmer. Their son, James Michael Palmer, would come along in 1985. Sue spent many happy years as a stay-at-home mom that allowed her to be involved in PTA and school activities before returning to the work force in 1993, where she resumed her bank teller career for National City Bank. In 2004, Sue was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in her epiglottis and had surgery and radiation to treat the disease. This damaged her voice, which caused her to make the decision to resign from her position with the bank. Sue kept active with membership to The Better Breathing Association and made many friends and enjoyed monthly luncheons. Sue loved to ‘window shop’

and always enjoyed finding

a good deal on the clearance end cap. She was an avid reader, she loved books (especially biographies) and had subscriptions to several magazines including Readers Digest, she would frequently start conversations with “I read an article...”. Later, Sue became a member of Grace of God Lutheran Church, where she was active in Lydia circle and enjoyed Saturday evening church services. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, older sister Sally Jane Hertenstein Dudley, her beloved cousin Dianne Yoesting Goslee and her husband of 35 years John. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann (Erik) Palmer; one granddaughter, Ta’laiya Italy Palmer; son, James Michael Palmer; brother, Christopher (Michelle) Hertenstein of Powell; niece, Sarah Hertenstein of Powell; nephews, Clayton (Vanessa) of Royal Oak, MI and Jacob Hertenstein of Columbus; great nephew, Calvin Hertenstein also of Royal Oak, MI; niece, Brenda (Eric) Dudley Aamodt; great niece, Jessica (Mark) Faulk; and sister-in-law, Debra Palmer Kinnison of Greenfield, Ohio. She will be missed by cousins, Joan Smith, Linda Warner, Danielle (Jacoby) Knerr, Lynn (Justin) Goslee Hines; and the rest of her Hertenstein, Schrader, Palmer families as well as her church friends. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2022, from noon-2pm at Newcomer Funeral Home in Grove City, Ohio with funeral service immediately following. No public graveside burial will occur at the request of the family. Donations may be made in Sue’s name to The James Cancer Hospital at OSU.
