NCAA visits Columbus to eye Final Four site

The Greater Columbus Sports Commission hosted the NCAA women's Final Four committee at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday afternoon for a site visit and evaluation.

Columbus is one of seven finalists to host the Women's NCAA Final Four starting in 2027 through 2031. Nationwide Arena would be the host in conjunction with Ohio State. The last time the city hosted the event was in 2018.

“We are very proud of the tournament that was here in 2018,” Linda Logan, CEO of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission said. “When you think about things we couldn't control, there were three amazing games and some great weather, but we all know that we can never rest on our laurels.”

Columbus would also welcome in the Division II and II championships if it wins the bid.

This idea of one site for multiple divisions was first utilized in 2016 when the Women's Final Four was in Indianapolis. The goal was to create a stronger experience for the student-athletes who compete in the championship.

The year's Final Four in Dallas will mark the second time that the NCAA has gathered the women of DI-DIII together for the event, and the hope is it happens again.

“During this five-year period for this bid cycle, (2027) through (2031), the goal is to have another opportunity,” said Lynn Holtzman, NCAA vice president for women's basketball.

There have been other women's NCAA title games held in Columbus. In 2021, it was home to the Division I volleyball title game. Most recently, the 2022 women's bowling championship was staged in Columbus.

However, hosting the women's Final Four would showcase Nationwide Arena and its multipurpose abilities. The Columbus Blue Jackets are also supportive of their venue being home to the event.

“They know how important this event is to the city and are supportive of women's sports in general,” Mike Gatto, general manager of Nationwide Arena said.

Columbus submitted its final bid in July.
