If Trump is nominated, GOP must back him

- Your Turn Bernie Moreno Guest columnist

When Joe Biden was campaigning for president, he regularly talked about uniting our country, but, soon after his inauguration, he began labeling Donald Trump supporters as potential domestic terrorists and threats to democracy.

He talked a big game about unity on the campaign trail, but his actions as president did not bear that out.

His immediate jump to slander his political opponents, calling MAGA Republicans “semi-fascists,” is a big reason why the country is so divided today, but Biden is not only responsible for dividing our nation with his words, he is also responsible for breaking it with his actions.

Biden hellbent on reversing every key Trump policy.

Under then-president Donald Trump, America became a net energy exporter for the first time in 75 years, had a secure border, was respected on the world stage, and had a booming economy.

Ever since Joe Biden took office, it seems as if he’s hellbent on reversing every key Trump policy that made our country stronger.

Upon his election, Biden immediately moved to shut down the Keystone Pipeline while instituting radical Green New Deal policies that make cheap energy harder to produce. Unsurprisingly, Biden’s energy policies are the reason we are no longer energy independent today.

Trump put America first by cutting taxes, ending needless regulations, and fighting for fairer trade deals. Biden raised taxes, kowtowed to China on trade, increased burdensome regulations, and recklessly spent trillions of dollars.

Americans paid dearly for Biden’s economic policies with near-record high gasoline prices, raging inflation, and a weak economy.

Perhaps even worse than Biden’s destruction of our economy is his dereliction of duty at our southern border. Biden reversed Trump’s catch-and-release policies, put a halt to the completion of Trump’s border wall, and openly called for amnesty for illegals.

The results?

In two years, over a million foreign nationals “got away” or were encountered entering our country illegally, unnamed U.S. Customs and Border Protection sources reportedly told Fox News in January.

All the while, fentanyl deaths in the United States are at record levels and rising.

Additionally, there’s Biden’s weakness on the world stage.

Trump delivered peace in the Middle East through the Abraham Accords, stood up to China on trade, kept us out of new wars, and began the process of responsibly withdrawing from Afghanistan.

Instead of peace, Biden’s weakness has brought us to the brink of World War 3 because of Russia and Ukraine. China is laughing at us as they openly fly surveillance balloons over our nation, and Biden hesitated to shoot them down.

Worst of all was Biden’s tragic failure in Afghanistan. Max Soviak of Berlin Heights died due to the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan ordered by Biden. Not only did Max and 12 other brave Americans die unnecessarily, but the ineptitude of Biden’s botched exit from Afghanistan also gave Putin the green light he sought to invade Ukraine.

There are some Republican candidates running for office, who dislike Trump and will not commit to supporting him if he wins the GOP nomination. Failing to unambiguously commit to the GOP nominee, should be disqualifying for any Republican candidate.

Some people wish Trump’s words were more polished, but the difference between every other politician and Trump is that he gives us full and honest access to all his thoughts — which is preferable to the deception most politicians engage in publicly.

At the end of the day, I care more about actions, and Trump’s actions made us stronger, safer and more prosperous.

Ohioans know deep down that none of the disasters we are facing under Biden would have happened if Trump were sitting in the Oval Office. For that reason, he has my full and unequivocal support for president in 2024.

Our country needs him back in the White House. Bernie Moreno is a Cleveland businessman and a first-generation American. He ran in the Republican primary for the then-open U.S. Senate seat.
