Browns host Welsh rugby standout Rees-zammit

- Chris Easterling

The Browns have stepped beyond both the sport of football and the borders of the United States to try to find more talent.

Welsh rugby player Louis Reeszammit visited with the Browns this past week, a league source told the Akron Beacon Journal.

Rees-zammit has been participating in the NFL’S International Player

Pathway Program since January. That culminated with him going through a Pro Day workout at the University of South Florida, where he posted a 4.43second 40-yard dash.

The other team with which Reeszammit has confirmed a planned visit is the New York Jets. He is hoping to land a spot as either a running back, wide receiver or return specialist.

Rees-zammit previously was a member of the Welsh National Team, where he was a winger. He left the team in January and moved to Tampa, where he joined the NFL’S international program staged at IMG Academy.

In September, the NFL announced a change in the practice squad rules that allows for a 17th spot for an international player. Those players would also have roster exemptions for the offseason program and training camp.

There have been 37 international players signed by teams, and 18 of those players are currently on NFL rosters.

● York returns: Kicker Cade York has re-signed with the Browns inking a futures deal with the team, according to an NFL source who spoke with the Beacon Journal.

The Browns selected York in the fourth round of the 2022 draft out of LSU. After an inconsistent preseason last year, they acquired Dustin Hopkins from the Los Angeles Chargers and cut York.

York, 23, spent last season on the practice squads for the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants. A quad injury in December landed him on the Giants’ injury list.
