Passengers escape bus swept away by Kenya floodwater
TULA, Kenya – Passengers on a bus that was swept downstream by floodwater on Tuesday in Kenya’s east clung to ropes as they crossed rapids to get to safety.
All 51 people aboard the Nairobibound bus escaped after the vehicle failed to make it across a river swollen by flash floods.
Video showed many of them stranded on top of the semi-submerged vehicle for hours as they waited for assistance.
Record floods have killed dozens of people across East Africa in the last six months. Scientists say climate change is causing more intense and frequent extreme weather events.
7-year-old Alabama girl sells lemonade to buy mom’s headstone
After her mother unexpectedly died last month, a 7-year-old Alabama girl launched a lemonade stand to raise money for her headstone.
Emouree Johnson, of Scottsboro, Alabama, began selling lemonade last week and has quickly raised nearly $10,000 following an outpouring of support from her community, local news stations reported. Neighbors, firefighters, nurses and deputies stopped by for a cup of lemonade – some even offering $100 bills.
“I didn’t know just making a little lemonade would bring this many people to my house,” Emouree said. “It’s fun, but it’s unbelievable at the same time.”
Emouree’s grandmother Jennifer Bordner said the second grader was devastated after the death of her mom, Karli Bordner, who died unexpectedly in March at the age of 29. The lemonade stand was her granddaughter’s idea, she said, and the support it’s garnered has helped Emouree heal.
