Father’s Cancer Journey Inspires Family’s Advocacy and Unity

-

Archie Mcmillion’s journey with cancer has been a profound chapter in his family’s story, one that has reshaped their perspectives and priorities. It all began in October 2009, when he received the unexpected diagnosis of breast cancer.

His daughter, Lynda Snyder, pondered, “When you think of breast cancer you think of women; not a 77-yearold father and grandfather.”

The initial shock and disbelief transitioned to a determined fight as he underwent a mastectomy and rigorous chemotherapy treatments. Remarkably, his cancer entered remission, offering a glimmer of hope and a chance to resume a semblance of normalcy.

After his diagnosis and treatment, the following May, Lynda, her husband, Lee, and their children participated in Komen’s Race for the Cure for the first time, marking the beginning of their involvement in cancer advocacy and awareness.

Yet, life presented further challenges when, in June 2020, Lynda’s father collapsed while coaching a youth baseball team. Subsequent visits to the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center confirmed metastasized breast cancer, delivering a devastating blow. A treatment plan involving daily medications and quarterly injections was given to manage the disease’s progression.

“My dad’s cancer journey has reinforced the mindset that family is the focus. Reducing the noise of outside distractions and speaking life and positivity into situations,” said Lynda.

During this difficult journey, Lynda and her siblings supported their father in various ways. As the youngest of five, Lynda managed medical appointments and communication with doctors, while her siblings provided physical assistance, transportation, and emotional support for their parents, married for 68 years.

The family continued to face challenges, particularly when their father was diagnosed with leukemia a year ago. The family’s steadfast faith provided comfort and strength through uncertainty. Prayer became their constant source of hope and resilience amid the emotional rollercoaster of his illness.

Despite the trials, there were moments of celebration and gratitude, such as their father’s 90th birthday, a testament to his resilience and love for family. Through it all, they leaned on each other for support.

Reflecting on their journey, Lynda emphasizes the importance of living in the present and cherishing each day. “Live in the moment and let tomorrow take care of itself. You won’t feel the physical pain that they do, but the mental pain is there. Be present. Don’t shy away; they need you now more than ever.”

As Lynda shares her family’s experience, she hopes to shed light on the mental and emotional toll of cancer, urging others to be present and supportive of their loved ones battling the disease. Though the physical pain may be theirs to bear, the need for companionship and understanding is ever-present, a reminder to stand together in the face of adversity.
