GOP’S spurious case for voter fraud

- Eric Duncan Thurman Jackson

Your June 11 letter “Liberals ignore voter fraud” should have been headlined “Conservatives ignore facts.”

There is no mass voter fraud, but the attempts at suppressing the vote have become all too obvious. There were only two known cases of noncitizens voting in Tennessee in 2010. Two cases out of how many votes? That doesn’t come close to equaling a percentage point of the vote totals, and there is no evidence to suggest that there were a whole lot more that went undetected. Any felons caught voting were prosecuted under current law.

There is evidence to suggest that more than 400 Tennessee residents and American citizens have had their voting records purged in preparation of having their names purged from the rolls. What is going on in Florida is criminal, or so says the Justice Department.

The fact is this: In all of these states that are purging voter rolls and passing ID bills, you could count on your fingers the number of cases of voter fraud. As these are mainly Republican- controlled states, you would think that any attempts at mass voter fraud by Democrats would be uncovered for all to see. That is not the case.

What is happening is much worse. Americans are being denied their voice. Republicans are the ones trying to steal elections. Do not believe Republicans when they tell you they are trying to clean up the elections. They are doing the exact opposite, because they know they cannot win on merit. So they try to turn it around on us, and say we are the corrupt ones. They should be ashamed.

Another use for voter ID

Before casting their votes, the legislators should be required to show a photo ID (June 10 article, “Lawmakers bend rules to help each other / Absentees often cast vote, state finds”).
