Dr. Edward J. Boling, president of the University of Tennessee, announced yesterday he will resign July 1, 1988, after almost 18 years guiding the state’s biggest land grant university. Dr. Boling, 65, said he may become president emeritus of the university, or take a Distinguished Professorship, which would enable him to help with fundraising efforts. His successor will be picked by the university’s Board of Trustees. Despite reports that former governor Lamar Alexander might someday succeed Dr. Boling, university trustee James Haslam II, an Alexander confidant, said he didn’t believe the former governor would be a candidate for the post.

An anti-submarine bomb with 21/ pounds of TNT in its nose was found last night on Mud Island only 10 feet from three barges loaded with explosive material. Capt. Clyde Robinson of the tug, H.E. Bowles, spotted the “Hedge Hog” bomb nestled on the west bank three feet from the Mississippi River. It was of a type used by destroyers as depth charges in World War II. Capt. E.C. Swann of the Memphis Homicide Division said the bomb was loaded with TNT. Under heavy escort the bomb was taken to the Memphis Naval Air Station on a mattress in a transport truck. Mike Spengel, in charge of the Navy’s ordnance squad, said the bomb will remain on its pad until it can be checked this morning.
