Whitehaven assaults follow Um-area maul

Two women were attacked by dogs Tuesday morning, just three days after a toddler was critically mauled by another dog.

Tuesday’s attack occurred about 9 a.m. at Faronia and Mayhill in the Whitehaven area.

Police found a 54-year- old woman with injuries from a dog bite. She was taken to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis in critical condition, but her condition was later upgraded.

While investigating, police discovered that another woman was also injured and taken in a private vehicle to Methodist Hospital South. The 38-year- old woman was in noncritical condition.

According to the preliminary investigation, the 38year- old was in that area when three dogs attacked her. A passing driver saw the attack and began blaring his horn, then got out to help.

After the dogs ran, the driver took the woman to the hospital.

Then, the dogs attacked the second victim, police said. She was reportedly getting off the bus when she was attacked.

Witnesses told police that the dogs then ran to a nearby residence in the 1300 block of Farrow.

At 1308 Farrow, police found Miranda Hogan, 41, and Lawrence James, 18, who said they own two of the dogs, but refused to turn the third dog over to officers.

Police got a search warrant and found the third dog in the attic. All three were taken to the Memphis Animal Shelter.

Hogan and James were both cited for having vicious dogs and allowing them to run loose.

MPD also charged both with false reporting.

In Saturday’s incident, a 2year- old boy was attacked about 6:45 p.m. when he wandered into a neighbor’s backyard in the 3300 block of Carrington Drive.

The boy was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in extremely critical condition. — Jody Callahan:
