Mcilroy in tie for lead; Woods 1 back
Rory McIlroy, flawless with his irons, birdied his last two holes for an 8-under 64 and was part of a four-way tie for the lead Thursday at the BMW Championship at Carmel, Ind., with Bo Van Pelt, U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and Graham DeLaet. Tiger Woods shot 65.
GOLF
Jiyai Shin shot a 9-under 62 to take the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s Kingsmill Championship at Williamsburg, Va. With 33 players still on the course when play was halted by darkness Thursday, the 24-year-old South Korean was two shots ahead of the field.

Ryan Newman has signed a one-year contract extension with Stewart-Haas Racing for next season. Newman is in the final year of the deal he signed in 2009.
BASKETBALL
The New Orleans Hornets have signed 2012 second-round draft pick Darius Miller, a 6-8 forward from Kentucky. ... The Indiana Pacers have signed former Grizzlies guard Sam Young, Sundiata Gaines and Blake Ahearn to free-agent contracts. Young was a secondround draft pick (36th overall) of the Grizzlies in 2009.
HOCKEY
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr have discussed procedural details that could soon lead to resuming contract negotiations as early as this week, sources said.
