Browns trade Mccoy to 49ers

CLEVELAND — Colt McCoy’s days with the Browns are over.

McCoy, who became expendable when Cleveland signed veteran free agent Jason Campbell last week, was traded Monday to the San Francisco 49ers, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The Browns got a fifth- and seventh-round pick in this month’s draft for McCoy and Cleveland’s sixth-round pick, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the teams have not yet announced the trade.

McCoy started 21 games in three seasons for the Browns, who selected the former Texas star in the third round of the 2010 draft. However, McCoy lost his job last season when the Browns took Brandon Weeden in the first round, and McCoy was knocked further down the depth chart once Campbell was signed to a two-year deal. Campbell is expected to play behind Weeden next season, but could challenge him for the starting job.

In San Francisco, the 26-year- old McCoy will compete with Scott Tolzien to back up Colin Kaepernick. The Niners have been looking for a reliable backup since trading Alex Smith to Kansas City at the start of free agency.

McCoy, 6-15 as a starter, appeared in three games last season as Weeden’s backup. He came in after Weeden hurt his shoulder against Denver on Dec. 23, but suffered a right shoulder injury on one of the four sacks recorded against him by the Broncos.

DEVELOPMENTS

Raiders acquire Flynn from Seahawks: The Oakland Raiders are changing directions at quarterback once again.

The Raiders acquired Seattle backup Matt Flynn on Monday for draft picks, signaling an end to Carson Palmer’s brief tenure as starter in Oakland.

Fox Sports reported Palmer was expected to be dealt to Arizona. The Raiders paid a hefty price when they acquired Palmer from Cincinnati midway through the 2011 season, trading a 2012 firstround draft pick and 2013 second-rounder for the former Pro Bowler. They now will move on from Palmer before they have even finished paying up on the trade.

Oakland will send a fifth-round pick in 2014 and a conditional pick in 2015 to Seattle for Flynn. The Raiders also will receive a late-round pick from Arizona if the deal for Palmer is completed.

Chiefs gather for workouts: Franchise left tackle Branden Albert was the only player absent as the Kansas City Chiefs gathered Monday for the start of voluntary offseason workouts.

Albert would have become a free agent this offseason had he not received the franchise designation from the Chiefs. He signed the contract worth $9.82 million late last month.

The Chiefs mainly spent their first day of workouts in meetings, where new coach Andy Reid laid out the groundwork for the offseason program and the coaching staff handed out playbooks, though several players said they already feel a more positive vibe at Arrowhead Stadium.

Kansas City struggled to a 2-14 finish last season.

Saints sign two free agents: Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says New Orleans and two unrestricted free agents, defensive end Ken-yon Coleman and quarterback Luke McCown, have agreed to terms on oneyear contracts.

Ravens player suspended: Baltimore Ravens special teams player Christian Thompson has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2013 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The suspension was announced Monday by the NFL.
