25 years ago: 1988

“The Passion of Rodin” ended its two-month Memphis stay Sunday as the most popular major exhibition ever at Dixon Gallery and Gardens. Gallery director John Buchanan said 64,977 people attended the exhibition, which opened Feb. 5. The previous attendance record was the 55,708 who turned out for “Masterpiec­es from the Armand Hammer Collection” last November and December.

50 years ago: 1963

The biggest bowling binge in the city’s history will get underway tonight with the opening of the National Tournament of the Woman’s Internatio­nal Bowling Congress at Imperial Lanes. More than 15,000 women will participat­e in the event, which will stretch over the next six and a half weeks. And when they aren’t knocking the pins down, they will be out on the town ringing dollar signs up on the city’s cash registers. It is the longest and largest con- vention ever to be held in Memphis, and by the time the last ball is rolled on the night of May 20, the Chamber of Commerce estimates the women will have poured a million and a half dollars into the city’s tills.

75 years ago: 1938

A school for baseball umpires seeking jobs in the Municipal Baseball Leagues will be conducted this week at the Recreation Department office at the Fairground­s. Willis McCabe, Zach Curlin, Larry Long and Marion Hale will conduct the classes.

100 years ago: 1913

The Equal Suffrage Club will meet tomorrow at the Nineteenth Century Club to hear Harry Anderson discuss the Progressiv­e Party and the move to obtain voting rights for women.

125 years ago: 1888

A new fence has been erected around Market Square and it has been nicely painted. But it will not do much good because it is so low that anyone can jump over it without any trouble.
