Rangers romp past Penguins

-

Ryane Clowe, Derick Brassard and John Moore injected instant offense just hours after being acquired by the Rangers, and host New York scored a season-high three power-play goals in a surprisingly dominant 6-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night.

Clowe came to New York on Tuesday night in a trade with San Jose, and Brassard was part of the package New York received on Wednesday in the deal that sent star forward Marian Gaborik to Columbus right before the NHL trade deadline.

Clowe scored two goals — after netting none for the Sharks in 28 games this season — and added an assist, and Brassard had a goal and three assists for the Rangers, who scored three times in the first period and never looked back.

Brian Boyle and defenseman Ryan McDonagh added goals, and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 26 shots in the Rangers’ highest-scoring game of the season.

FOOTBALL

With Robert Griffin III rehabbing from a serious knee injury, the Washington Redskins bolstered their alternative quarterback plans on Wednesday, bringing back Rex Grossman and giving Pat White another chance at the NFL. Grossman agreed to a one-year deal to return to the team, and White also agreed to sign with Washington in a comeback attempt after three years away from the league.

PREPS

If Wednesday night’s McDonald’s High School AllAmerican Game in Chicago is any indication, the 27-8 mark coach Holly Warlick’s first Lady Vol basketball team recorded this season is just the tip of the iceberg. Tennessee signees Mercedes Russell and Jordan Reynolds put on a show at the United Center, each recording a double-double to lead the West to a 92- 64 victory over the East in the 12th edition of the girls contest at the home of the Chicago Bulls. The 2013 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year from Springfield , Ore., the 6-foot- 6 Russell was named the game’s MVP after finishing with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Reynolds, a 5-foot-10 guard who attended Central Catholic High School in Portland, Ore., also registered a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
