Wake up, America

- Charles W. and Jo Ann Hall, Somerville, Tenn.

One nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. This is what the Pledge of Allegiance says. This is what we are supposed to stand for. Our Constitution has been debased by our elected leaders. We as a nation are losing our power of the people by not going to the polls on election day and by not caring what is on the ballots and who is on the ballots. Whatever happened to an informed citizenship? Have we become so complacent, or do we not care?

The populace needs to become aware of what is happening. Our greatest threat may prove to be from within our own people. Just stop and contemplate what could happen if we become so complacent and think it could not happen here. This complacency prevailed in Europe before a paper hanger named Adolf Hitler began to shout out his philosophy. His listeners believed his promises of prosperity as he grabbed power and attempted to take over the world. He made a grave mistake in believing he could defeat the great power, the United States of America, and the English empire.

History is destined to repeat itself if we do not learn from it. We cannot just let things slide by and expect no one to take advantage. We must maintain a strong defense and pray that we will never need it. A strong defense is a deterrent to any would-be enemies of our way of life.

Happy Fourth of July. May God continue to bless America.
