Good grief! A half-century of Christmases for Charlie Brown

- By Kevin McDonough

By any measure, a halfcentury is a long time. In pop culture it’s an eternity. “It’s Your 50th Christmas, Charlie Brown” (7 p.m., WATN-TV Channel 24) salutes the holiday cartoon favorite. Kristen Bell hosts and invites musical guests to perform numbers from Vince Guaraldi’s jazz score.

The season’s first airing of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (8 p.m., WATN-TV Channel 24) follows.

This special has endured because it addresses a yearning to set aside the holiday as something more than just a shopping spree. It speaks to a desire for something sacred.

“Black Friday,” and even “Black Thursday,” have turned the holidays into a consumer stampede and torn department store workers away from their Thanksgiving meals. The theme of this little cartoon is that Christmas has a meaning far beyond doorbusters.

Speaking of hyper-commercial culture, the new sitcom “Superstore” (9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., WMCTV Channel 5) explores the lives of employees of a gigantic retail chain. Ben Feldman stars as Jonah, a new hire, who immediately gets off on the wrong foot with his floor manager, Amy (America Ferrera), but catches the eye of the lovelorn and delusional Dina (Lauren Ash).
