Long-distance love for basketball Tigers

- Lila McElroy, Fayetteville, Tenn.

Regarding the Feb. 4 Memphis Tigers-UConn game, I have followed the Tigers from 220 miles away since 1975. I love them when they’re winning; I love them when they’re losing. Shame on you Tiger fans who do not go to their games.

To the person who stood up and said to coach Josh Pastner, “Please resign,” I say, “How rude!” Express your unhappiness in a proper way. It’s basic etiquette.

I would drive 220 miles to every game if I could. Please support our team. Go Tigers, go! residential community for adults with intellectual disabilities, and I see firsthand the needs of this population. Rachel’s tender heart lives on.

I never cease to be appalled at the consistently inappropriate behavior of Cam Newton, quarterback for the Carolina Panthers.

I remember the trouble he found himself in with police at the University of Florida in 2008-09. When he was awarded the Heisman Trophy in 2010, I could not believe it. I thought that a Heisman winner had to be not only a superior football player, but also a person of sterling character.

His behavior during the Super Bowl postgame interview again provided more evidence about the kind of person he is. He showed up late for the interview, answered mostly in monosyllables, and abruptly got up and left the interview. Before he exited, however, he did admit he is a poor loser and went on to say something like, “Show me a good loser, and I will show you a real loser.”

Isn’t he the least bit grateful for having been named MVP in the league and for making millions as a professional player? I hope his coach and teammates are thoroughly embarrassed by his attitude.
