Redbirds come back, top Cubs

In the first game of a doubleheader Saturday night, the Redbirds scored three runs in the ninth inning to take a 6-4 victory over the Iowa Cubs.
The second game was not over by press time.
Charlie Tilson’s twoout, two-run homer off Iowa’s Gerardo Concepcion (1-3) was the key hit in the Memphis ninth.
The Cubs had tied the score at 4 in their half of the ninth.
Harrison Bader went 3 for 5 for the Redbirds and Jose Martinez was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Anthony Garcia, Carson Kelly, Dean Anna and Matt Williams drove in the Redbirds’ other runs. Garcia, Kelly, Anna and Williams each had a double, and Martinez had a triple.
Redbirds reliever Ryan Sherriff (4-0) allowed three hits and one run. Starter Deck McGuire went five innings, allowing five hits and a run, and Sam Tuivailala gave up four hits and two runs in two innings.
For today’s 6:05 p.m. game (gates open at 5), the first 1,500 kids 12 and under receive a Rockey The Redbird lunchbox; the first 2,500 fans 12 and under will receive a free ice cream treat, courtesy of Prairie Farms; and kids 12 and under may run the bases on the field after the game.
