Gonzalez leads Dodgers past Cards

ST. LOUIS — Adrian Gonzalez hit a grand slam and Howie Kendrick added a two-run homer, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers spoil Mike Mayers’ major league debut in a 9-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night.

Scott Kazmir (9-3) pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits.

Former Ole Miss star Mayers (0-1) lasted just 1⅓ innings, throwing 62 pitches. He gave up nine runs on eight hits, including two home runs. His ERA is 60.75.

Kenley Jansen got his 29th save in 34 opportunit­ies with a spotless ninth.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Cubs 6, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee: Anthony Rizzo hit a three-run double in the seventh and Chicago rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat Milwaukee.

The rally made a winner of reliever Joe Nathan (1-0) in his first game in the majors since April 2015.

The Cubs broke through against the Brewers bullpen after struggling with runners in scoring position against starter Junior Guerra.

Mets 3, Marlins 0 at Miami: Steven Matz pitched six innings for his first win since May, and New York took the rubber game of its series against Miami.

Matz (8-6) allowed four hits, walked two and struck out six.

Pirates 5, Phillies 4 at Pittsburgh: Adam Frazier’s pinch-hit home run in the seventh powered Pittsburgh over Philadelph­ia. Frazier’s home run was his first in the majors.

Diamondbac­ks 9, Reds 8 at Cincinnati: Paul Goldschmid­t’s solo home run in the fifth gave Arizona the lead for good, and the Diamondbac­ks finished with four homers in holding off Cincinnati.

Yasmany Tomas chipped in a with a pair of solo home runs and Wellington Castillo had a three-run shot for Arizona.

Padres 10, Nationals 6 at Washington: San Diego hit back-to-back homers off Shawn Kelley in the eighth and scored four runs off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth to beat Washington.

Rockies 7, Braves 2 at Denver: Trevor Story hit his fourth homer in three games, Tyler Chatwood allowed one hit over five erratic innings and Colorado swept Atlanta.

Nolan Arenado jumpstarte­d the offense with a three-run homer in the first and DJ LeMahieu added a solo shot in the fourth.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Orioles 5, Indians 3 at Baltimore: Pinch-hitter Nolan Reimold hit a gamewinnin­g, two-out homer in the ninth inning after Pedro Alvarez reached on a strikeout, and Baltimore topped Cleveland for a three-game sweep.

Cody Allen (2-4) began the ninth by striking out Alvarez, but the ball eluded catcher Roberto Perez. After fielding the bouncing ball off the backstop, Perez hit Alvarez in the helmet with the throw for an error.

Blue Jays 2, Mariners 0 at Toronto: J.A. Happ and three relievers combined on a one-hitter, Edwin Encarnacio­n hit a solo home run and Toronto beat Seattle, avoiding a three-game sweep. Happ (13-3) won his eighth straight decision and set a career-high for victories.

Red Sox 8, Twins 7 at Boston: Rick Porcello became the first Boston pitcher in 55 years to open a season 10-0 in Fenway Park, and Hanley Ramirez and Travis Shaw both hit a threerun homer as the Red Sox edged Minnesota to earn a split of a four-game series.

Rangers 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City: Delino DeShields homered in the seventh to break a tie and Texas defeated Kansas City. DeShields walked and doubled before leading off the seventh with his third home run.

White Sox 5, Tigers 4 at Chicago: Melky Cabrera drove in Adam Eaton with a game-ending single in the ninth inning after closer David Robertson gave up three home runs in the top half to lead Chicago to a win over Detroit.

The White Sox beat the Tigers 4-3 earlier in the day on a single by Eaton in the ninth after play was suspended because of rain the previous night.

Astros 13, Angels 3 at Houston: Jose Altuve hit two of Houston’s seasonhigh five homers and had a career-high six RBIs to lead the Astros to a threegame sweep of Los Angeles.

Athletics 3, Rays 2 at Oakland: Billy Butler hit a tiebreakin­g home run off Erasmo Ramirez with one out in the eighth inning and Oakland held on to complete a three-game sweep of Tampa Bay.

INTERLEAGU­E

Yankees 5, Giants 2 at New York: Nathan Eovaldi pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning, Carlos Beltran and Mark Teixeira hit early solo home runs and New York beat San Francisco.
