Tiger soccer teams on road this weekend

-

The University of Memphis men’s and women’s soccer teams are on the road this weekend, with the men opening their season against UAB in Birmingham and the women visiting No. 19 Ole Miss tonight.

The Tiger women (2-0) will play the Rebels (2-0) at 7 in Oxford, Mississippi, then travel to Little Rock to take on the UALR Trojans on Sunday at 7 p.m.

“We are continuing to get better but we have a lot of work to do,” Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. “It’s a long season and we are still hoping to get some injured players back. Ole Miss is a rival of ours and we know we have to be at our best to have a chance to win that game.”

Senior Valerie Sanderson has three goals and an assist for Memphis. The men’s team will open at 7 against UAB. The Tigers will then travel to Atlanta to play at Georgia State on Sunday at 11 a.m. CDT.

“We have been pleased with how the preseason has gone on the field and off of it,” Memphis head coach Richard Mulrooney said. “On the field I’m pleased with the progress. We are far from a finished product, but compared to previous years I feel like we are further along in our development. I think we can be competitive right off the bat.”

The Tigers are counting on senior Raul Gonzalez, who led the U of M last season with seven goals.
