Timberlake to Fallon: No idea selfie illegal

Justin Timberlake has learned his lesson about snapping selfies in a voting booth.

Timberlake appeared Wednesday night on “The Tonight Show” where he joked with host Jimmy Fallon about getting into trouble for the photo he posted on Instagram Monday that showed him casting his ballot at the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Germantown.

“I recently voted — super quiet, under the radar,” he joked.

Taking a ballot selfie in Tennessee is a misdemeanor violation, and the penalty could include up to 30 days in jail and a $50 fine. However, District Attorney Amy Weirich made it clear Tuesday that no one was pursuing criminal charges against the entertainer, who later removed the photo from his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Timberlake, a Millington native who lives in California and recently bought a spread near Nashville, said on “The Tonight Show” that he had no idea votingbooth selfies were illegal.

“I was like, this is going to be great and inspire people,” he said.

The uproar over Timberlake’s voting selfie also merited a mention on “The Daily Show” with Trevor Noah.

“You know how Donald Trump said to be on the lookout for shenanigans at voting places? Well now, I think I believe him,” said Noah, who added he didn’t see why taking pictures should be illegal. “We live in an age of sharing now, that’s how millennials roll.”

On “The Tonight Show,” Timberlake gave potential voters some advice: “Get out and vote … but don’t take a picture of yourself in there.”
