Mom accused of stabbing son, then leaving him at school

Memphis police are investigat­ing after a mother allegedly stabbed her 16-year-old son in the leg Thursday morning, then dropped him off at school.

Toni Coleman, 41, has been charged with aggravated assault in the incident. She is being held at Jail East.

According to police, the incident happened a little before 7:30 a.m. Thursday near Ridgway and Quince and ended at Ridgeway High at 2902 Ridgeway. Coleman was driving the victim and his sister to school, when she and her son started arguing, police said. Coleman pulled out a pocket knife, reached behind her seat and stabbed her son in the leg, police said. She then took him the rest of the way to school and dropped him off, police said. The teen was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in non-critical condition; he required several stitches for the cut.

In an affidavit, Coleman said her son was assaulting his sister and being disrespect­ful, and that she swiped the knife at him to scare him.

Man charged in fatal shooting in park

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in the fatal shooting of another man during a basketball game in a South Memphis park Monday.

Ladareion Greer has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Brandeon Thomas.

Police responded to a shooting call Monday in Belz Park on Fernwood Avenue and Shelby Street. Officers found Thomas on the ground with a gunshot wound to his right eye.

A witness told police that Thomas was playing basketball when he got into an argument with Greer, according to the arrest affidavit.

Greer is accused of firing several shots at Thomas ,who was taken to the Regional Medical Center where he died Tuesday night.

Greer turned himself in Wednesday. He told detectives that he fired his .32-caliber gun four or five times after an altercatio­n with Thomas at the basketball court.

Greer is in jail on a $1 million bond. He will be in court Friday for a video arraignmen­t on the charge.

Stephens arrested on charges of domestic violence

D.J. Stephens, a former University of Memphis basketball player, has been arrested in connection with a domestic violence incident involving his child’s mother, police said.

Stephens, 25, was arrested Wednesday night and charged with domestic aggravated assault for allegedly attacking his child’s mother. He was released on $15,000 bond late Thursday night. According to the arrest affidavit, the incident occurred at 5:45 p.m. Monday outside a home in the 6900 block of Waters Bend Cove. The woman told police that she and Stephens were arguing when he grabbed her wrists and pushed her down. She told police that when she got up, Stephens grabbed her by her neck and threw her on the ground.

When she got up again, she said, Stephens grabbed her arm and threw her to the ground again, causing her to hit her head on the pavement. She told police that Stephens left on foot as she lay on the ground dazed with blurry vision.

Stephens will be in court Friday.
