Memphis attorney charged with rape

One of the attorneys representing the family of a man shot and killed by Memphis police was charged with rape Wednesday, jail records show. Arthur Horne, a partner in the Horne and Wells firm, was booked into jail Wednesday on charges of aggravated rape and aggravated assault. He remained behind bars at the Shelby County Jail late Wednesday; no bail had been set. According to an affidavit, Horne allegedly went to his ex-girlfriend’s house Tuesday. The woman told police that they argued, then Horne threw her to the ground, punched her several times and tried to strangle her, the affidavit said. She said Horne then raped her. According to the affidavit, the woman had injuries to her face, neck and arms.

Horne, 46, gained prominence as one of the attorneys representing Henry Williams, the father of Darrius Stewart. Memphis police officer Connor Schilling shot and killed Stewart after a traffic stop in July 15. Horne was one of the attorneys who filed a $17.1 million lawsuit against the city and others over the death.

Efforts to reach Horne’s law partner, Murray Wells, were unsuccessful late Wednesday.

Two more arrested in fatal shooting of 15-year-old

Memphis police have arrested two more people in connection with the fatal drive-by shooting of a 15-year-old killed outside a house party in Southeast Memphis.

Terrian Hawkins and Vernon Houston, both 19, have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Terrance Maxwell.

Maxwell was shot on Jan. 21 as he stood outside of a home in the 4900 block of Blue Wing in Southeast Memphis.

According to a witness, someone in a car drove by and fired at the house, yelling “Grape Street!” The Grape Street Crips are a gang in the city.

Maxwell died on the scene. A 16year-old boy was also shot and survived his injuries.

According to an arrest affidavit, Houston turned himself in to police on Feb. 28. He told investigators that he was in the car that drove past the house and fired shots from the vehicle.

Witnesses told police that Hawkins was in the party with guns and was one of the people they saw shooting, according to the affidavit.

Houston and Hawkins are also charged with attempted first-degree murder in the incident.

Last month, police also arrested Marcellus Williams, 18, and Marquez Banks, 20. Both were charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.
