Homeowner shoots burglary suspect near Getwell Road

Memphis police said a homeowner shot a man breaking into his home in an East Memphis neighborhood Tuesday morning.

Police responded to a burglary call in the 3700 block of Sturgeon Avenue off Getwell Road and New Willow.

A woman told police that someone broke into her home on the street at 3 a.m. She said she stayed in her bedroom until she heard the front door open and the person leave. She called police after hearing a loud disturbance and a gunshot at the house next door.

When police arrived at this house, a man told officers he was asleep when he heard his girlfriend yelling that someone was in their home.

The man said he ran into the front of the house and found the suspect screaming and putting his hands near his jacket. The homeowner told police that he shot the suspect.

Another person in the home then hit the suspect in the head with his gun to stop him from leaving.

Police said the suspect ran from the house and was found nearby attempting to break into another house on the street.

Emmanuel Lane, 28, was arrested and charged with aggravated burglary and attempted aggravated burglary. Lane was treated at the Regional Medical Center for his gunshot wound and other non-critical injuries.

Horn Lake shooting may have been retaliation, police say

A Monday night shooting that left a Horn Lake woman in critical condition apparently was retaliation for a fight among juveniles earlier in the day, detectives said Tuesday.

The victim, who has not been identified, is a 37-year-old woman who was airlifted to Regional One Medical Center. She was still in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon, Lt. Nikki Lanphere of Horn Lake Police said.

Officers arrived at the scene in the 5200 block of Haynes Drive about 8 p.m. Monday and found the victim. Lanphere said the investigation renandez vealed that an altercation occurred earlier Monday among juveniles, some of whom lived at the shooting address.

“Based on information uncovered during the investigation, detectives believe the shooting was retaliation from this fight,” Lanphere said.

She said the investigation is continuing, and more information will be released as available. Police are asking that anyone with information contact Horn Lake Police at 662-393-6174.

Power surge causes fires at three homes in East Memphis

Memphis fire officials said a power surge that could possibly be weatherrelated caused fires at three houses on one street in an East Memphis neighborhood near the University of Memphis.

Around 7 a.m. Tuesday, fire crews were called to fires reported at three homes on South Reese Street off Southern Avenue and Midland, said police spokesman Lt. Wayne Cooke.

Cooke said 42 fire personnel responded to the fires that were under control around 7:30 a.m. Firefighters said heavy smoke was coming from the attics of several of the homes when they arrived.

Power was shut off to the homes in the 400 and 500 blocks of Reese.

No injuries were reported. The fires started around the time heavy storms rolled into Memphis.

“It was an electrical surge, and it appears to be possibly weather-related, but we are still investigating,” Cooke said.
