Memphis police have recovered a woman held inside a house in South Memphis and was shot in the stomach by a man who was barricaded inside the house and negotiating with police, authorities said.

Police tweeted that the situation had been resolved and that the man was in custody.

The incident began when police received a call at 10:02 a.m. Friday at a home in the 800 block of Lucille. The caller told police that a man shot a woman.

A neighbor said police evacuated the street. Shortly after noon, MPD negotiators and the TACT unit truck arrived. Officers pushed reporters further away from the scene and set up a perimeter around the house.

"We are attempting to make contact with a male who is believed 2 be inside a residence on Lucille," MPD posted on its Twitter account. "It is unknown if any1 has been injured."

Shortly before 1 p.m. police spokesman Louis Brownlee arrived on the scene of the barricade and provided an update to the media about the situation.

He said others including children were inside the home but they got out and were safe.

He added that police negotiators talked to the man by phone.

"We want to bring this to a peaceful resolution," Brownlee said during the barricade.

Neighbor Greg Brown lives next door to the house on Lucille. He said at least four children were in the house and a man forced them outside after the shooting.

"I heard the gunshots and saw the kids crying in the yard," Brown said.

GRAD Academy on Prospect is near the barricade.

Marshaye Smith said she was at the school for a conference and looked out the window and saw police cars.

"I didn't know what was going on with all the police," Smith said. "The kids are safe in the school. I'm going to get my son."
