Man killed outside apartment

- YOLANDA JONES

A 21-year-old man was shot and killed outside of a Fox Meadows apartment complex early Thursday morning after an altercation with two people.

Memphis police were called around 4 a.m. to The Reserve at Mt. Moriah in the 1200 block of Pickering where they found the victim dead on the scene.

MPD Major Rodney Adair said the victim got into an altercation with two men who were inside a Pontiac G6.

The men fired from the car and the victim was hit three times in the chest, Adair said.

The men fled and police are searching for them.

Doretha Kirkland, whose son lives in the complex off Mt. Moriah Road, drove there to check on her son after seeing the shooting on the news.

She said her son, Terrance Sharp, had just arrived home from work when he heard the gunfire and tried to save the man shot.

“He put the towel on his chest. He was trying to save the young man,” Kirkland said. “He said, ‘Man, hold on.’ The young man said, ‘I’m trying.’ By the time the ambulance got here he held on for a few more minutes and then he was gone.”

Police have not released the victim’s name as they continue the investigation, but family and friends on the scene identified the victim as Michael Roby of Brooksville, Mississippi, outside of Starkville. The family said his girlfriend is a few weeks pregnant and he was in Memphis visiting before they left for a weekend trip to New Orleans to celebrate his and his mother’s birthday.
