Annual spring plant sale features a wide range of plants from difficult-to-find natives to choice shrubs, ferns, peonies and herbaceous perennials. April 8: Fayette Cares 25th annual Plant Sale: 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at First Citizens National Bank, 7285 U.S. 64, Oakland, Tennessee (in front of Kroger). Annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, tropicals, shrubs, vegetables, herbs, etc. Fayette County Master Gardeners and plant experts on hand to offer advice and guidance. April 8: Herbal Work Study: Vermicompo­sting: 8:30-11:30 a.m. (8 a.m. sign-in) at Memphis Botanic Garden. First two hours: weeding, grooming, thinning, planting. Last hour learn about using earthworms to compost kitchen and garden waste. Bring your favorite hand tools for weeding and grooming (soil knives, Cape Cod weeders, old kitchen knives, trowels, pruners, gloves, etc. – no hoes or rakes needed). Arrive at Horticultu­re Building between 8 and 8:30 a.m. Dress appropriat­ely (wearing layered clothing suggested). This learning opportunit­y is “purchased” via a barter system: you must work the first two hours (8:30-10:30 a.m.) to attend last hour of class (10:30-11:30 a.m.), making this a free event. Porch pots are so popular that plants with perfume scents have been added to the mix. April 21-22: Spring’s Best Plant Sale: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Memphis Botanic Garden. A huge assortment of perennials, annuals, tropicals, herbs, shrubs and trees, plus specialty garden items by local artisans. Expert Garden staff and Master Gardeners on-hand to assist with purchases and plant care tips. Proceeds from plant sales directly support the educationa­l and horticultu­ral growth of the Garden. Free admission. April 21-22: Volunteer Plant Sale: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. April 21 and 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. April 22 at Lichterman Nature Center, 5992 Quince Road. Thousands of native and wildlife-friendly plants grown on site for this once-a-year sale. Experts on hand to answer questions about plants offered, as well as other gardening topics.
