12-year-old shot in arm, in stable condition

A 12-year-old boy was in stable condition after he was shot by a 13-year-old during horseplay with a gun, Shelby County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Earle Farrell said.

The shooting happened on Riggory Cove in southeast Shelby County, near Hacks Cross Road and the Mississippi state line.

A group of boys were apparently playing with a gun that they found under a mother’s mattress, Farrell said. The bullet went through the 12-year-old’s left arm and he was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

Farrell said authorities had detained the 13-yearold, that the child would be brought to Juvenile Court and that the shooting would probably be ruled nonintentional.

“The upshot of all this — if you’ve got weapons, make sure they’re locked up,” Farrell said.
