FedEx provided “key evidence” that led to the identification of the Austin bombing suspect, a company official said Wednesday. The suspect who terrorized the Texas capital for three weeks died in a self-inflicted explosion Wednesday as authorities closed in.

An internal email from FedEx Express president and chief operating officer David J. Bronczek credited “our advanced security capabilities and the vigilance of our team members.” TV station KVUE-TV reported store receipts

and surveillance video at an Austin area FedEx store led authorities to the suspect. He was identified as Mark Anthony Conditt of Pflugerville, Texas.

Memphis-based FedEx also turned over “extensive evidence” collected at a San Antonio area FedEx Ground sorting facility where an employee was slightly injured when a package bomb exploded Tuesday. A second package mailed by the same person was recovered.

Authorities attributed two deaths and multiple injuries to the person they believe left cardboard packages containing bombs on doorsteps and set an explosive device with a trip wire.

Bronczek’s email said, “As you know, there was an attempt to use our networks for criminal activity related to the Austin, Texas, bombings. FedEx was able to provide law enforcement with key evidence leading to the identification of the suspect responsible for the bombing because of our advanced security capabilities and the vigilance of our team members.”

“Regarding our contribution to the effort, U.S. Representative Michael McCaul, Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security, was quoted this morning as saying, ‘I hope his biggest mistake was going through FedEx,’ ” the email said.

“We are grateful that none of our FedEx team members have been seriously injured, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of these senseless attacks, as well as to the entire Austin community,” Bronczek said.

FedEx chairman and CEO Frederick W. Smith began an earnings call with analysts Tuesday afternoon by commenting on the Texas incident. “First and most importantly by far we are very thankful there were no serious injuries from the package that was detonated earlier at our San Antonio FedEx Ground facility,” Smith said.
