Police: Memphis man is charged after intentionally crashing into officer’s vehicle

-

A 21-year-old man has been charged with assault after police say he intentionally crashed his car into an unmarked police vehicle in Hickory Hill Tuesday afternoon.

Orestes Carmicle of Memphis has been charged with aggravated assault and reckless driving in the incident.

He is accused of deliberately driving his Hyundai into an Organized Crime Unit police convoy and hitting an unmarked police car at the intersection of Mendenhall and Winchester, according to an arrest affidavit.

An OCU detective in the car that was hit was taken to Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries that included a concussion.

The incident began about 4:30 p.m. when police responded to a report of a crash in front of the 3500 block of Mendenhall Road.

Carmicle was arrested on the scene but refused to give officers a statement.

Memphis police spokesman Louis Brownlee told The Commercial Appeal Tuesday that the suspect may have been a disgruntled driver or mental illness may have played a role.

“The officer was on his way to handle something totally unrelated to the crash,” Brownlee said.

Carmicle remains in jail and will be arraigned on the charges Thursday.
