25 years ago — 1993

Memphis researcher­s and thus Memphis women were selected Tuesday to participat­e in what is being called the largest and most important study of women’s health ever launched in the United States. The Universiti­es Prevention Center, the joint effort of Memphis State University and the University of Tennessee, Memphis, was one of 16 centers nationwide selected to conduct the research for the National Institutes of Health. (NIH).

50 years ago — 1968

Three top church leaders in Tennessee called last night for fresh talks in the stymied mediation of the city’s garbage strike, urging “sincere goodwill, mutual respect and constant productive dialogue.” The call came while the city was clamped under a curfew for the third straight night after rioting erupted Thursday during a march of strikers and sympathize­rs led by Dr. Martin Luther King.

75 years ago — 1943

An increase in wages from 33 to 35 cents an hour is provided for 460 employees of the city Engineerin­g Department — the garbage collectors. The City Commission approved the raise in a resolution passed yesterday.

100 years ago — 1918

Behind the British Lines in France — Leaps for life from burning observatio­n balloons are becoming quite common, according to the British Royal Flying Corps. The camps are outside the range of German howitzer shells, but still well within the range of their high velocity naval guns. Making a balloon ascent from the front is a hazardous undertakin­g. Last week 12 officers in six balloons were shot down by German airplanes within an hour. One man was shot down from a height of 4,000 feet and was found lying unconsciou­s in the bottom of the basket. He was suffering from that new wartime malady “shell shock.”

125 years ago — 1893

President Clapp of the Legislativ­e Council and City Secretary John Shea and Commission­er Kelly are back from Nashville this morning. They report that the city’s budget bill has gone through the state legislatur­e and that there will be no delay in the city’s power to levy and collect taxes this year. The tax rate for 1893 is $1.72.
