Grizzlies attendance declines for the fourth straight season

Roughly six weeks ago during an institutio­nal tanking strategy, the woeful Grizzlies sent material to season ticket holders enticing them to renew their plans with a variety of incentives and optimism that the franchise would get back on a winning track during the 2018-19 season.

Memphis owned a 21-58 record on the eve of its final regular-season home game Sunday afternoon against the Detroit Pistons in FedExForum.

Attendance has declined for a fourth straight season.

A forecast that called for inclement weather Saturday forced the Grizzlies to move their annual “thank you” party for its MVP season ticket holders inside FedExForum. But the headcount won’t count toward sagging attendance figure this season.

The Grizzlies averaged 15,945 fans through 40 home games.

They averaged 16,519 during the 201617 campaign and the number was 16,697 in 2015-16. Memphis experience­d an average of 17,329 fans going through the turnstiles during the 2014-15 season.

By comparison, the Oklahoma City 2017 Thunder (18,203), Sacramento Kings (17,555), and New Orleans Pelicans (16,383) average more fans. The Brooklyn Nets (15,540) and Atlanta Hawks (14,377) are the only teams with a worse attendance average than the Grizzlies this season.
