Help Tennessee nonprofits earn grant money

A minimum fundraising goal must be met first

- From staff reports

More than 30 Tennessee nonprofit organizations are competing in a program that could earn them grant funds for their projects. Each is asking for online donations to make them eligible to receive a grant.

Earlier this year, A Community Thrives, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, announced it will give $600,000 in grants to selected organizations with ideas that could help their communities thrive. More information about A Community Thrives is at act.usatoday.com.

Groups that applied for the program produced and presented projects and created short videos on programs from literacy to women’s rights to confronting the opioid crisis. The organizations — more than 500 across the United States — are competing for 16 grants valued from $10,000 to $100,000.

The organizations have to meet a minimum fundraising goal to be eligible for a grant. Their supporters can help through online donations. Only online donations made through the organization’s CrowdRise webpage are eligible to count toward ACT fundraising minimums. Donations will be accepted through 11:59 a.m. Eastern time May 11.

The groups have been divided into two tiers. Tier 1 organizations, those with budgets of less than $1 million, must raise at least $3,000 to be eligible for a grant. Tier 2 organizations, those with budgets over $1 million, must bring in at least $6,000 during the crowdfunding period to be eligible.

After the fundraising period, A Community Thrives and the Gannett Foundation will decide which projects receive grants. Money will be awarded to organizations that work with small and large operating budgets and have ideas in areas of arts and culture, wellness, and education.

The Gannett Foundation is a corporate foundation sponsored by Gannett Co. Inc. and serves to link the corporate mission and purpose with communities in which the company operates.
