In 2017, “Moonlight,” the second feature film from writer-director Barry Jenkins, was awarded the Oscar for Best Picture. Despite that success, Jenkins’ first feature remains relatively unknown: The 2008 movie’s title is “Medicine for Melancholy,” and it stars Wyatt Cenac and Tracey Heggins as twentysomething African-Americans on a cultural and romantic tour of selfdiscovery through gentrifying San Francisco. Pre-fame, Jenkins himself brought his first movie to Memphis in July 2009 for a screening and scriptwriting workshop sponsored in part by the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission; the movie returns to the big screen this week, in an event hosted by Indie Memphis. “Melancholy” will be preceded by “Bonfire,” a new short by one of Memphis’ more talented young filmmakers, Kevin Brooks.
