E.C. Taylor, Zaid Alyousef win fans' vote for high school athlete of the week

E.C. Taylor of St. Benedict and Zaid Alyousef of MUS are the winners of this week's fans vote for high school girls athlete of the week.

Taylor, a junior who has committed to play softball at Florida, earned 47.23 percent of the votes (3,219 total) after collecting three hits, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs in the Eagles' victory over Jonesboro.

Second place went to Breanna Miles of Southwind, who won the 400 at the Volunteer Track Classic in Knoxville in a state-best time of 56.00. Miles finished with 2,717 votes or 39.87 percent.

Rounding out the voting were Taylor Smrt (Colliervil­le softball), Makayla Pugh (Munford softball) and Charli Rice (Tipton-Rosemark softball).

Alyousef scored all three of his goals in the first 10 minutes of the match to lead the Owls to a 3-1 victory over region rival Briarcrest. He earned 6,580 votes total (47.56 percent) to defeat Bartlett pitcher Chris Braswell.

Braswell finished with 5,376 votes (38.86 percent) after pitching a six-inning one-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Panthers defeated Dandy Dozen No. 1 Covington. Rounding out the voting were Zach Davidson (FACS track), Hunter Goodman (Arlington baseball) and Yusef Thomas (Lausanne baseball).
