WASHINGTON — In a new war of words between President Clinton and Senate Republican Leader Bob Dole, score round one for Dole. First, Clinton on Saturday accused Dole, who successful­ly blocked the President’s $16.3 billion economic stimulus package, of seeking $23 million from that package to convert a senior citizens home into a boathouse in his home state of Kansas. Then Dole on Monday called Clinton’s charge “a $23 million lie.” The White House backed down, saying Clinton’s statements were part of a “joke.”

50 years ago — 1968

HOUSTON — A three-man surgical team removed the heart of a 15-year-old apparent suicide victim Friday and transplant­ed it into a Phoenix, Ariz., accountant in the world’s ninth heart transplant. The three-man Houston team said the recipient, Everett Clare Thomas Jr., 47, was in “excellent condition.” A single shock started his new heart beating after 2 hours of surgery at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital by a team headed by Dr. Denton Cooley, a pioneer in open-heart surgery.

75 years ago — 1943

NEW YORK — John L. Lewis declared yesterday that the United Mine Workers will insist on their demands for a $2-a-day raise. Striking workers began returning to the pits yesterday in a 15-day truce ordered by President Roosevelt. Meanwhile, members of Congress were angrily demanding anti-strike legislatio­n aimed at war-vital industry.

100 years ago — 1918

From an editorial – Many people in this country resent the military funeral accorded Baron Von Richthofen, the “ace” German aviator. He was brought down within Allied lines and buried in the little village where he fell. There was religious music, an artillery salute, and a lonesome bugle call. American aviators placed a wreath on his casket. People who object to this see only the enemy, not the man. Richthofen was an honorable foe and he had the respect of his adversarie­s.

125 years ago — 1893

A canvass of Memphis banks yesterday disclosed, to everyone’s surprise, that the city has not more than $50,000 in gold. The survey was taken by a group of bankers pledged to aid the United States treasury by forwarding stocks of gold to the New York subtreasur­y. Gold is regarded with such disfavor here that local banks refuse to accept it in settlement of balances among themselves.
