Memorial Day: Five things to do
Looking for something to do this Memorial Day weekend beyond the family cookout?
The National Weather Service forecast calls for clouds and a good chance of rain each day, but the precipitation shouldn’t be steady enough to wash out all the fun.
So keep an umbrella handy, where appropriate, and check out these five things to do:
901Fest
A celebration of all things Memphis, the 901Fest is set for Saturday downtown. Food, local music and arts will all be available, closing out with a fireworks show. Tickets and more information are available on the website.
Great American River Run
Part of Memphis in May activities, the Great American River Run is a halfmarathon and 5K race downtown Saturday. The post-race party includes food, drinks and live music. To sign up and for more information, visit the website.
Summer Symphony
Guest artist Wynonna will join the Memphis Symphony Orchestra under the stars at the Memphis Botanic Garden on Saturday evening. Guests may bring lawn chairs, picnic baskets and coolers. A fireworks finale will conclude the evening. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit liveatthegarden.com or call 901-576-4107.
Sundress Soiree
The second annual Sundress Soiree will be 7-9:30 p.m. Sunday aboard the Queen III Memphis Riverboat. Boarding begins at 6 p.m., with departure at 7 p.m. and return at 9:30 p.m. The party cruise will feature two bars on three levels. A dress code will be strictly enforced, with no tennis or athletic gear allowed. Entry will be determined by attire. Minimum age is 25 for men, 21 for women. Only 300 tickets to be sold. For more information, call or text 901-3644228.
Memorial Ride
The second annual Memorial Ride by Bumpus Harley-Davidson, 2160 Whitten Road, will raise money for homeless veterans. The ride begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and ends at 10 a.m. at Bumpus. A flag retirement ceremony will follow, so bring any unserviceable flags to the event.
