Snedeker’s 62 one shot off Southwind course record

Brandt Snedeker had a quiet first round at the FedEx St. Jude Classic but made up for it in a big way on Friday.

Snedeker shot an 8-under 62, just one off the TPC Southwind course record of 61 set by Bob Estes and Jay Delsing. Estes shot 61 in the first round in 2001 and Delsing did so in the final round in 1993.

The Nashville native was also one shot off his career low round of 61, which he last accomplished in 2015 in the second round of the Wyndham Championship.

“I got off to such a great start, I was 4-under through the first seven holes and really had some good opportunities after that,” Snedeker said, “When you start rolling it well here, you just feel like, just hit the green and you’ll make it because the greens aren’t very big and they’re rolling perfect.

Snedeker, ranked No. 92 in the world, started his day with birdies on the second and third holes and added birdies on Nos. 6 and 7.

He finished his day with birdies on three of his final four holes to complete his bounceback from shooting 1-over par Thursday.

He called Thursday’s score an anomaly but on a day that saw low scores from the early groupings, Snedeker was pleased as he was three shots behind leader Dustin Johnson.

“It’s one of those days you’d like to have. You don’t have them very often out here where the hole looks like it’s the size of a beach ball and you can’t miss a putt,” Snedeker said. “Obviously played the way I need to play this week or expected to play, so to have a round like this validates what I’ve been working on.”
