Collierville’s Culbertson celebrates MLB draft call

- John Varlas Memphis Commercial Appeal USA TODAY NETWORK - TENNESSEE

Peyton Culbertson

got to share the biggest moment of his baseball career in a most familiar place, the dugout at his alma mater, Collierville.

Culbertson — a 6-1, 220-pound righthander at Arkansas State — was taken by Miami in the eighth round (No. 237 overall) of last week’s Major League Baseball draft. Although he had one year left at Jonesboro, he’s elected to turn pro and was preparing to head to the Marlins’ affiliate in Jupiter, Fla.

“I was actually up at Collierville,” Culbertson said. “My dad (Dragons assistant was running jv practice and I was just hanging out ... I was just kind of in a state of shock. He stopped practice and I went out to show him and he gave me hug. “It was a surreal moment.” Added his father, “he’s worked really hard. It’s going to be a little bit of a transition but it’s just like when we dropped him off at college. He was his own man then and he’s grown up a lot. It’s a neat opportunity.”

Culbertson — who was the winning pitcher in the state semifinals in Collierville’s title-winning season in 2013 — was considered a draftable prospect as a senior. But a case of tendinitis sent teams looking elsewhere, and he followed through on his commitment to Arkansas State.

He went 4-0 as a freshman, 5-7 as a sophomore and 2-5 this past season. More importantly than the record though, he led the team with a 3.73 ERA and struck out 48 in 502⁄3 innings. Culbertson’s final 11 innings came out of the bullpen, a move that allowed him to pick up some added velocity that appealed to the Marlins.

Culbertson was part of a group of five players with local ties who were chosen in the 40-round draft. That list was headed by Bartlett grad and Memphis pitcher to the Kansas City Royals in the second round (58th pick).

Former DeSoto Central and Ole Miss pitcher went in the 13th round to Oakland. A preseason AllAmerica selection after leading the nation in saves in 2017, Woolfolk went 1-1 in 141⁄3 innings for the Rebels this spring. Last month, he announced he was “stepping away” from the team for health reasons. University of Memphis pitcher

went to the World Series champion Houston Astros in the 31st round. The right-hander from Oklahoma City went 6-5 with a 4.85 ERA this spring, striking out 58 and walking 39 in 591⁄3 innings. He struck out nine in just six innings in a win over Central Florida on March 30.

The Tigers also had a selection in the last round when was chosen by Minnesota. An outfielder from Prosper, Texas, Webb batted .274 this season with one homer and 27 RBIs.
