Memphis continued adding to its 2019 recruiting class when cornerback CJ Johnson announced Monday he would commit to the Tigers.

Johnson, from Greenwood, Miss., made the announcement via Twitter and is the fourth player to commit to Memphis in the past seven days and second in the past 24 hours. He is not ranked by 247Sports or Rivals.

Johnson’s announcement comes after the Tigers got a commitment from another Mississippi native in three-star running back Rodrigues Clark on Sunday. They give the Tigers six total commitments in this recruiting cycle.

“After Rodrigues committed, I hit him up and we talked,” Johnson said Monday. “I committed to Memphis because of the family atmosphere. They made me feel like I was at home every time I visited.”

Johnson, who is 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, had three interceptions in his junior season and also had 58 tackles. He also caught 24 passes for 357 yards and two touchdowns.

He had offers from Louisiana Tech,

Southern Miss and Tulane, among others, according to recruiting sites.

Clark ran for 1,705 yards and 17 touchdowns last season and is ranked the No. 38 player in Mississippi according to 247Sports.

After Whitehaven four-star wide receiver Keveon Mullins decommitted from the Tigers in May, Memphis has moved quickly to secure commitments from other targets. Three-star tight end Drew Martin (North Little Rock, Ark.) and three-star quarterback Sheldon Layman (McGill-Toolen, Ala.) committed last week.

The Tigers also have commitments from three-star defensive tackle Trevis Hopper of Central and four-star defensive end Eric Gregory, a Memphis native now at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Memphis is ranked No. 53 on 247Sports’ Team Rankings and No. 4 among American Athletic Conference schools. Rivals has the Tigers ranked No. 48 nationally.
