OTTAWA — Defense Minister Kim Campbell, a 46year-old lawyer from Vancouver, Sunday won a party race to succeed Brian Mulroney and became the first female prime minister of Canada. Campbell was chosen on a second ballot at the Progressiv­e Conservati­ve Party’s leadership convention, defeating Environmen­t Minister Jean Charest by a vote of 1,817 to 1,630. As the new Tory leader, Campbell will succeed Mulroney as prime minister possibly as early as next week — just in time to prepare for her first appearance on the internatio­nal stage at the G-7 summit of industrial democracie­s in Tokyo.

Douglass Park, a small Negro neighborho­od that has made serious efforts to prevent its own decay, is now up in arms over the establishm­ent of a city dump next to the neighborho­od. Residents yesterday stood along the narrow section of Holmes adjacent to Douglass School and Park to voice their feelings about the long line of orange trucks that carried refuse by the school and park to the dump, establishe­d by the city three weeks ago. “This is a slap in the face,” said Mrs. David Dickens of 1627 Pope. “We just can’t have this.”

75 years ago — 1943

WASHINGTON — The Senate passed a bill yesterday outlawing strikes in government owned or controlled plants during the war and providing stiff penalties for strike leaders. The vote was 55 to 22. The bill is believed to be the first anti-strike measure passed in the history of Congress.

100 years ago — 1918

American Army Headquarte­rs, France — Attacking the Germans in Picardy at dawn yesterday, the United States Marines in four hours drove back the enemy more than two miles and occupied all the important high ground northwest of Chateau Thierry.

125 years ago — 1893

Visitors who went on outings Sunday to Raleigh complained that they were compelled to buy cups at a dime apiece to drink water from the springs. The day was sultry and drinks of a more stimulatin­g nature abounded. Some thought it rather bad that they had to pay to drink from the famous Raleigh Springs.
