TOKYO — The newest economicsu­mmit joke is that Hillary Rodham Clinton came here to free Crown Princess Masako Owada. The only spouse of the G-7 leaders here, other than the wife of the Japanese host Kiichi Miyazawa, Mrs. Clinton has fascinated the Japanese people by her independen­t spirit and easy partnershi­p with her husband. Feminism is a raging controvers­y here because most women are poorly paid and rarely promoted.

50 years ago — 1968

SAN SALVADOR — President Johnson took to the running board of his car Sunday in a campaign-style swing through the crowded market square of this tiny coffee capital shouting “Muchas gracias, mis amigos” (Many thanks, my friends) over a bullhorn as mobs engulfed him. The scene at the market place was similar to the scene Saturday when Johnson arrived. It was the first time most observers could remember Johnson taking to the running boards and using the bullhorn since the 1964 presidenti­al elections in the United States. While there he held bilateral talks with individual Central American presidents and visited the United States Embassy.

Allied Headquarte­rs, Australia — American landing troops have won two beachheads near the Japanese base of Munda, Gen. Douglas MacArthur announced Thursday. The action came during the heaviest attack ever unleashed on a ground target in the South Pacific.

100 years ago — 1918

Wharton Jones was elected superinten­dent of Memphis city schools by the board of education last night. He will replace Dr. A.A. Kincannon, who has resigned.

125 years ago — 1893

The Chickasaw Guards, who have been in training camp for two weeks in Raleigh, will leave tonight for Nashville to enter the competitiv­e drill contest. It has been two years since they won the title and Capt. William Kyle says he has high hopes.
