SEOUL, South Korea — President Clinton warned North Korea today to stay out of the nuclear weapons business as he left for the tense demilitari­zed zone to visit American troops. His warning echoed a speech Saturday to the South Korean National Assembly, in which Clinton said the United States will seek punitive measures against North Korea unless the Communist nation allows internatio­nal inspection­s of its nuclear facilities. A senior U.S. official said later that Clinton was referring to economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations.

50 years ago — 1968

CHICAGO — Against the wishes of some advisers, Richard M. Nixon Wednesday offered to debate Hubert H. Humphrey on national television if both men win their party nomination­s. Nixon, confident of securing the Republican nomination, predicted Humphrey would get the nod of the Democrats and said a debate with the Vice President would stir “immense” voter interest. Nixon said he hoped such a debate would not turn out like his debates with John F. Kennedy in 1960. According to some observers, Nixon’s showing in those debates led to his election defeat.

75 years ago — 1943

The Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society last night passed a resolution that men should not wear “coats, ties or collars in the summer, except when formal dress is required” and asked that newspapers help in fostering the idea.

100 years ago — 1918

Chancellor F.H. Heiskell has been endorsed by the Democratic executive committee in his bid for re-election. First signers of a Memphis Bar Associatio­n endorsemen­t for him are Caruthers Ewing, Allen Hughes, Charles Burch, John Martin, Walter Armstrong and Grover McCormick.

125 years ago — 1893

PARIS — On Saturday night there was a big affray between the police and several hundred students here. The students marched singing and shouting to the Chamber of Deputies to protest persecutio­n by police. After many hours a few spokesmen among them were admitted to air their grievances. As night fell there was rioting and 15 policemen were injured with clubs and stones. The cavalry was called out to quell the uproar.
