A woman charged in the death of her three-month old baby made her first appearance in court on Tuesday without an attorney.

Bond for Jamyl Price, 22, charged with aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect in the death of her baby daughter, was set at $100,000 by General Sessions Judge Ronald S. Lucchesi.

Price was also ordered to return to court on July 16 with an attorney. She is being held at Shelby County Jail East.

Police responding to a suicide call on Sunday at the Germantown Falls apartments on Red Oaks Circle found Price unresponsive in the bathtub. Officers found the dead baby wrapped in a blanket on the floor of the master bedroom.

After regaining consciousness and en route to St. Francis Hospital, paramedics told police that Price said “she thought her baby could breathe underwater,” according to an affidavit.

Price gave a statement to investigators and admitted taking her daughter to the apartment complex pool at about 8 a.m. Sunday. She said she placed her daughter under water for 2-3 seconds and noticed the baby struggling to breathe.

The mother then took the baby back to her apartment and performed CPR for about 30 minutes, but did not call 911, investigators said in the affidavit.

After realizing the baby was dead “she spent the rest of the day inside the apartment trying to find ways to end her own life,” the affidavit said.
